Background

The Frigate is the most common United Earth vessel used in the war against the invading Jovian force, it is able to fight in space or in an atmosphere and carries a variety of conventional weapons.

The Frigate use a nuclear power plant to power its engines, weapons and environmental systems. In constant use since the Jovian invasion of the Mars in 2195, the United Earth Frigate can be seen in almost every battle, through its effectiveness against the Jovians was limited during the early stages of the Earth - Jovian war because of its limited offensive capabilities and its lack of Phase Transition technology.

While the Jovian Frigate is armed with heavy graviton weapons as standard, the pre war United Earth Frigate only carried conventional pulse laser cannon which have repeatedly been shown as infective against shielded vessels, this was seen in most battles, where the Frigate was easily destroyed by shields warships or by swarms of Jovian insects.

While the United Earth Frigate carries has a crew of Humans, the Jovian Frigate has a crew of Robots

The United Earth Frigate is out gunned by the Jovian Frigate and is only able to stand against them in combat if it is defended by other ships or if they have a far larger force of ships.

During the Closing stages of the Earth - Jovian war Nergal equipped many Frigates with Graviton Weapons, and enhanced shields, enabling them to directly combat the Jovian Frigate for the first time since the outbreak of war. When armed with Graviton weapons and shields (it is probable that the Frigate carries a distortion field and not a newer variety of barrier shield) the United Earth Frigate is able to match the Jovian Frigate on an equal basis in battle. It is likely, since the warships would have been refitted rather than manufactured with new technology, that the United Earth Frigate carries lighter shields but heavier armour, as well as lighter weapons but in a greater concentration on every ship. Making them equal to the Jovians.

Weapons

The Frigate carries a battery of conventional pulse laser weapons to attack enemy vessels, as well as defensive and offensive missile batteries. During the closing stages of the war many Frigates were equipped with the newer Graviton Beam cannon, used by the Jovians from the outbreak of fighting. Before the introduction of Graviton Beam weapons, the United Earth Frigate was outgunned by its main Rival, the Jovian Frigate. When equipped with Graviton weapons the Frigate carries equal firepower to the Jovians ship

During the Nadesico's first mission to rescue Human colonists from Mars (Episode 7 - The song that you will sing one day) the Frigate Crocus was seen to have survived being attacked by a Chulip (Episode 3 - leave the blue earth to me) and forced into a dimensional gateway, the ship, thought to have been instantly destroyed, had actually been transported intact to Mars Northern landmass. The Frigate was later destroyed to protect the Nadesico as it tried to escape to Earth. T

The Frigate had arrived on Mars prior to the time that it was devoured by the Chulip on Earth, showing that an unguided Boson Jump can result in a distortion of time. The distortion carried the Frigate over two weeks back in time so that it arrived on Mars before the Nadesico, it was covered by snow when observed by the crew but was still fully functional. The crew of the Frigate were not shown but it can be presumed that they were killed because almost all unguided Jumps have resulted in the death of the person entering the gateway.

Armour

United Earth warship carries metal armour and can stand moderate or sustained fire from most conventional laser weapons carried by warships, but until the closing stages of the war it did not use a defensive Distortion Field, and could not stand fire from a graviton weapon. Not having a Distortion Field means that the Frigate was not effective in battle until near the end of the war. It is probable that since it had to defend its self without a distortion field, that the United Earth Frigate carries much more armour that the Jovians warship.
