Akito becomes friends with the pilot Jiro Yamada who shares his fascination with classic anime , and who shares his quarters.

The UE Refuses to lower the Earth's defensive shield to allow the Nadesico to leave orbit and orders the capture or the destruction of the Nadesico to prevent it from falling into enemy hands.

UE ships are too busy fighting the Jovians to intercept the Nadesico so they bombard it with rockets as it climbs into orbit.
 
After the ships escapes from the rockets, the UE sends a small attack group of Delphinium fighters commanded by Jun Aoi to intercepts the Nadesico.

Jun's fighters are destroyed by Akito in and Jiro using Space Aestavalis and realizing that he must protect Yurika, Jun puts his robot in the path of a missile barrage aimed at the Nadesico, his is saved from the missiles by Akito and Jiro. 

The Nadesico penetrates the Earths Shield and escapes.

Admiral Munetake and his men escape from the hanger where they were being held prisoner and Jiro is killed by one of the soldiers.

Jun rejoins the Nadesico as the ships First Officer and they continue to Mars
