Background

Howmei is the head chief on board the Nadesico, she manages the galley and sees that the crews meals are prepared. Known as Miss Howmei to the crew and ma'm to the galley staff, Miss Howmei takes pride in the meals prepared in her kitchen, and supports the tradition of family cooking. 

She stores the largest collection of recipes and spices that most people ever see in her kitchen, and is able to supply (last) meals form most cultures and for every occasion. 

During the funeral services for those killed by the Jovians the galley was able to produce many of the traditional dishes eaten for these events (Episode 4 - Charmed by aqua space), even though each culture had a different style of cooking and used different recipes.

Howmei was a cook with the military before she came to Nergal, and used a story from her time with them to inspire Akito when he told her that he didn't want to fight anymore. Under her guidance Akito becomes a fantastic chief. Howmei and her staff are a constant inspiration to Akito.

Howmei is one of the few females who has no interest in Akito beyond his ability to prepare food in the galley.
