Background

Ruri Hoshino is the Nadesico's Science Officer, controlling the ships manual systems from her position on the bridge, including the Nadesico's weapons and flight control.

Ruri is 12 years old and the youngest member of the crew, she was an orphan raised by a husband and wife team working for Nergal, Ruri special Nano controllers to communicate directly with the Nadesico's computer.


Ruri was raised to be able to control large computerized vessels and computer systems, and is supernaturally intelligent. She often has to explain the scientific information being used for missions to the officers.

Ruri's intelligence is the result of genetic manipulation, though she was unaware of this until her natural parents locate her during the Earth - Jovian war. In actuality Ruri is the long lost Princess of a small European kingdom who was believed to have been killed during an incident at a fertility clinic in which she was to be implanted into her mother who was unable to bare children naturally. Ruri's parents later located her and welcomed her back into their family. However Ruri remained onboard the Nadesico until the conclusion of the war with the Jovians.

Ruri was raised in an isolated institute with many other similar children, the children underwent a special advanced education program to develop the full potential of their intelligence, unfortunately this program, and the lack of pier bonding incorporated into it lead her and the other children to have no social skills and to be remain isolated from other people as they matured. Ruri had recurring dreams about her adopted parents for many year but had no memory of their appearances, this was because they were computer generated parents designed to suit the basic human requirement for parent - child bonding in early life. After being raised for many years in the institute Ruri was sold to Nergal (She was adopted by two senior scientists who worked for Nergal, this was a front for the corporate purchase of a child).

Ruri's Nano implants were joined with the implants of the Ships pilots during an incident in which a robot created an artificial network between their Nano implants and Ruri's, enabling her to see ghost like images from the memories of the other pilots.
