Background

Inez Fresange is a scientist who was previously employed in Nergal's Phase transition laboratory on Mars before its destruction in October 2195. Inez briefly lived with other Martian survivors in caves beneath the Utopia Colony, she is the only Human survivor to have been rescued before the colonies remaining shelters where crushed beneath the Nadesico's distortion field (Episode 6 - Sort of like a fateful decision), crushing the other occupation survivors to death.

There is little that can be said about Inez's background, even she does not know exactly how old she is or where she comes from.

When she was eight years old, Inez was found alone in the Martian desert close to what is now the ruins of the Utopia colony, she had little memory of who she was or where she had come from. Inez was taken in by a local family and raised as a Martian, when she was an adult Inez joined the scientists at Nergal.

It was Inez who designed the Nadesico's' Phase Transition engines based on technology discovered in an alien artifact in the caves of Mars.

Initially Inez did not wish to join the Nadesico, feeling that it would be suicidal to try and escape the Jovian forces, preferring instead to remain with the surviving colonists, however after leading the Both the Nadesico and Jovians to the remaining survivors, Yurika slaughter them by activating the ships Distortion Field while flying over the shelter. The Nadesico looked to be the better place to die and so Inez decided to join the ship.

Inez is often used to explain the Jovian and Human technology, and knows more about Jovian weaponry than the military. She known more about Phase Transition technology than the scientists at Nergal, and aided them with their experiments in using Boson Gates.

Inez feels that she is close to Akito but does not know why, this is explained later on. 

Inez acted as the producer for the short film "getting to know Nadesico" or "Who, what, Nadesico"

Inez's mysterious past is brought to the forefront during the final stage of the Earth - Jovian war, when a colossal Boson computer was unearthed on Mars. Inez was first shown as a sweet five year old girl who was introduced to Akito and seen eating a fresh orange moments before her shelter was fired on by the Jovian invaders.

During the initial Jovian invasion of Mars in October 2195 the Young Inez was a civilian sheltering the Utopia Colony, original her name was Ai, she was thought to have been murdered by the Jovians. Akito, unwittingly activated the Chulip Crystal given to him by his Father ,when faced with certain death at the hands of a Jovian insect, and Boson jumped without a controlling factor to mitigate the time differential that can occur in long distance jumps, while he landed safely on Earth. Ai, or Inez as she became was thrown far into history, arriving at the time of the original Martian settlement (over twenty years back in time.

Unable to develop emotional relationships because of her background, Inez doesn't really care if people die or if the Jovians invade, as long as the don't make a mess or leave the lights on when they leave.
