Background
Admiral Munetake is the United Earth officer on assigned to supervise the
crew of the Nadesico, hr serves as a political officer rather than a
commander.
Admiral Munetake has the dubious honor of having served on the Earth's
flagship during the first battle of mars, it was the Admiral who gave the
first orders to fire on the Jovian forces with the ships defensive pulse
lasers after their main cannons where shown to be ineffective against the
Jovian capital ships. However it was not due to him that the United Earth
force was destroyed.
Admiral Munetake was assigned to the Nadesico before it escaped to Mars, it
was his men that re took the Nadesico for the UE before being captured by Mr
Horry and the remaining Nergal personnel. Jiro
Yamada was murdered by one of the Admirals soldiers when they made their
escape.
Admiral Munetake became UE officer to the Nadesico when it was brought back
to Earth (Episode 8 - The lukewarm cold equation episode) and commanded it
through the UE, providing missions and strategic information (Episode 10 -
The danger of femininity, and Episode 11 Finding yourself in a routine
plot). It was Admiral Munetake that lead the attack against the Jovian Gravitron
Rale Gun without briefing the Captain on the weapon.
During the events surrounding the development of the experimental prototype
Aestavalis, it was revealed that the soldier who confessed to murdering Jiro
Yamada was in fact completely innocent. It was the Admiral who shot Jiro.
The feelings of remorse over Jiro's death, and the strains of the war
eventually drove the Admiral insane. He commandeered the experimental
Aestavalis and used it in a failed attack on the UE Battleship Cosmos,
believing it to be an enemy warship. When he tried to activate the main
cannon, which had a lethal flaw, it overloaded and killed him. The admiral
died in 2198 during the closing stages of the war.
The Nadesico's crew dislike the Admiral and do not consider him to be one of
their officers, rather a UE Admiral that occasionally likes to propel them
against the enemy but not tell them what they are fighting or how they
should kill it.
