Background

After the Nadesico's integration into the United Earth Space Force, Erina Won became the ships co helmsman, sharing the position with Minato on a duty shift.

Erina was secretly the Personal assistant to the head of Nergal she is plotting to oust him as the companies manager and gain control. She was assigned to the Nadesico to observe the crew (Akito) for Nergal, she soon develops strong feeling for Akito but never becomes romantically involved with him.

Erina has a secret purpose on the Nadesico that is kept a mystery until the closing stages of the Earth - Jovian war. 

Erina saw security footage of Akito vanishing from his room and reappearing in the ships observation area when the Nadesico jumped through a dimensional gate (Episode 7 - The song that you will sing one day), a detail which she shared with Akatsuki Nagare, the pilot who came to the Nadesico with her.

Erina began experiments with organic Boson technology on using a captured Chulip, but none of the pilots sent into the dimensional gate came back alive.  Erina wanted to use Akito to develop Nergal's Boson crystal technology and to allow organic life to be sent through a gate.

During the development of this technology a Jovian attack was launched through Nergal's Boson gate, killing many scientists. During these events Akito first understands how he escaped from Mars. 

Akito had been given a Chulip Crystal by his father which activated during the final stages of the Jovian attack, enabling him to Boson Jump to Earth. 

This unstable jump also affected the young Inez Fresange, or rather a child named AI who was found wondering along in the desert over twenty years ago.
