Background
A veteran pilot, Ryoko was assigned to the Satsuki Midori, or L2, space
colony before it was destroyed, she was due to transfer to the Nadesico
along with two other pilots. In 2196 Ryoko was already an experienced pilot.
Born on Earth, Ryoko is the most macho of the Nadesico's' pilots, often
engaging in close combat with the Jovian forces. She pilots the red
Aestavalis and relishes destroying the invading forces.
After escaping the her colonies destruction by the Jovians, Ryoko brought
the colonies Aestavalis on board the Nadesico
(Episode 4 Charmed by Aqua Space) not knowing if her fellow pilots had
survived the attack or if they had been killed in .
The other pilots, Izumi Maki who had
sheltered in a cargo container, and Hikaru Amano
who had boarded the Nadesico through a breach in its hull plating, had
escaped. Though it was not said how she, Hikaru
Amano or Izumi Maki had survived. Though
they were probably in the hanger boarding their Aestavalis when the colony
first came under fire. Though only a brief distress signal was ever
received.
Ryoko was among the mutineers that took over the Nadesico when they read the
fine print in their that contracts which prevented close relationships
(beyond holding hands) between Nergal employees (Episode 5 - Ruri's
navigation logs).
Macho on the outside, Ryoko doesn't like people to known that she is
actually quite a sweet person. She has strong romantic feelings for Akito
but does not make them clear to him. She cried his name when she was
attacked by a Jovian robot on Mars (Episode 7 - The song that you will sing
one day), Hikaru and Izumi like to tease her
because of her feeling for Akito.
Ryoko originally had dark black hair as seen during memories of her
childhood. Her father was in the military though it is not said if he
survived the First Battle of Mars, or the subsequent Jovian invasion of
Earth and the moon. Her father once told her that everybody has a special
talent and Ryoko sadly accepted that hers appear to be living the life of a
soldier.
