Background

Megumi is the Nadesico's communications officer, from her bridge station she manages internal and external communications, including those with the Aestavalis, and with other ships. Megumi was in direct contact with the Satsuki Midori space colony at the time of its destruction.

As the ships communications officer Megumi must spend most of her duty time on the bridge with the Captain, even when the Nadesico is in free space. Before joining Nergal, Megumi was employed as a voice actress on a popular children's' cartoon, she returned to this job after the Nadesico was taken into military service.

After Jiro was killed (Episode 4 - charmed by aqua space) Megumi developed a close friendship with the Aestavalis pilot Akito, their shared feeling of loss over Jiro's death and the destruction of a space colony that they were communicating with. It seemed to both of them that they where the only members of the crew who were upset by so many deaths. Megumi's feeling inspired Akito to continue to fight so that he could protect the people that he loved.

During the period that the Nadesico was under military control, Megumi and Akito left the Nadesico together to start new lives as civilians, but Megumi become extremely possessive and demanded that Akito stop fighting. He left her to defend the city when the Jovians attacked because he couldn't allow innocent people to die because he refused to fight.

Though Megumi and Yurika both have strong feeling for Akito, he eventually left Megumi because Yurika encouraged him to fight to protect other people.
