Background

Akatsuki is the Nadesico's senior pilot, he flies a custom made Aestavalis that is superior to the standard models. Akatsuki joined the Nadesico during episode 8 - A Luke Warm Cold Equation when he rescued Akito from a Jovian attack. Prior to serving on the Nadesico, Akatsuki served on board the Cosmos, a Negal battleship leased to the UE.

Akatsuki's true reason for joining the Nadesico is to to watch the crew (Akito), but he is also a veteran pilot and joins the pilots on combat missions, he likes to make fun of anime to tease Akito.

Along with Jun and Seiya, Akatsuki is rather lonely and spends his time eating instant Noodles in the corridor.

Secretly Akatsuki is the chairman of Nergal, he succeeded his father as the head of the company and is aware of many of its secrets, including the true identities of the Jovian attackers, and the existence of alien time - space travel technology. Akatsuki also knows the true reason for the murder of Akito's parents.

Akatsuki was the youngest of two (or possibly the middle child of several more children), originally his elder brother was supposed to inherit the Nergal Corporation, but he was killed in a tragic accident on a shuttle between Mars and the Earth. After his brother's death Akatsuki's father put him under considerable pressure by pinning hi aspirations onto his remaining son.

During an incident when Akatsuki's Nano controller was linked to the Nano controllers of the other pilots, an image of his brother was seen by everybody who had undergone Nano treatment, and by Yurika and Inez who had swallowed or inhaled countless Martian Nano robots during their lifetime.
