Background

Yurika Misumaru is the Captain of the High Mobile Battleship Nadesico, she was born on the planet Mars in 2176. Yurika lived with her family in the Utopia colony until they moved to Earth in 2185. She lived very close to the Tenkawa family before their deaths in 2185, because the two families were from different backgrounds they  did not socialites together.

Yurika grew up with the young Akito Tenkawa, and has held romantic feelings towards him ever since they where children. Yurika  still follows Akito everywhere as she did when they were young, although Akito has ignored or (more often) run away from her whenever she got close.

Yurika believed that Akito and his parents had been killed in a tragic accident soon after she moved to Earth, her father (Admiral Misumaru) knew that Akito had survived but choose not to make it known to her. On learning that Akito was not dead Yurika decided to continue their "relationship". Even though Yurika has feelings for Akito, she known that he has to fight to defend Earth from the Jovians and willingly sends him into battle knowing that he could be killed or injured.

As a Captain, Yurika is as good as any in the UE, but because she was not fully briefed on the limitations of the Nadesico's' Phase Transition Engines when not in free space, or on the superiority of Jovian technology (even that they used Distortion Fields), she murdered the surviving Martian colonists (Episode 6 - Sort of like a fateful decision) by crushing their underground shelter with the Nadesico's' distortion field.

Yurika attended the UE military academy with Jun Aoi and graduated with full honors before becoming the Nadesico's Captain. Through Jun has romantic feelings towards Yurika, romantically, she does not seem to have noticed that he is alive.

Yurika stared as Miss Rabbit in the Nadesico information broadcast Who, What Nadesico? (Epsiode 7 - The song that you will sing one day) and was immortalized as a scale model by Seiya, (the show was later Named Getting to Know Nadesico), this show only lasted one episode, which and taken off air because of a shortage of power.

During the Nadesico's' escape from Admiral Misumaru (Frigates Pansy and Crocus, Destroyer Tobiume) Yurika ignored her father and the UE by leading the Nadesico through Earth's barrier shield and to the colonies on Mars. On Mars Yurika rescued the only Human survivor of the Jovian occupation (The scientist Inez Fresange) gaining much tactical information on the Jovians and their technology. Though she caused the death of the remaining colonists.

Yurika still commands the Nadesico now that it is fighting for the UE, though for joint UE - Nergal missions, briefings are often given by Admiral Munetake.
